The Wizard of Oz

Citizens' Theatre Company

The Wizard of OzAmid all the economic doom and gloom, it feels like an extra-special treat to enjoy a Christmas show that doesn't feel constrained by budget, and is also rich in imaginative ideas and wonderfully committed performances.

"The whole production has terrific energy and bounce"
This Wizard of Oz has a cast of more than a dozen, even without taking the munchkins into account. And not just any old dozen, either. Some of the company's best-known faces are here, including a couple who have in recent years picked up top acting honours at the CATS (admittedly, Cara Kelly and Andrew Clarke aren't all that easy to recognise under layers of colourful make-up).

The show's choreographer, Andrew Panton, also co-directs with Guy Hollands, and it really shows: the whole production has terrific energy and bounce, and fantastical happenings from the Kansas tornado to the melting of the wicked witch have the necessary wow factor.

Helen McAlpine's Dorothy matures very convincingly from self-centred child to responsible leader of men (and animals, too) and also equips herself very well in the song and dance numbers (the really rather creepy Jitterbug is a highlight). Her speaking voice is just right for the role of a young but confident girl while her singing voice is surprisingly soft, with a sweet tone.
Of her companions, Sandy Batchelor deserves special mention for his wonderfully floppy and touchingly humble scarecrow.

A six-strong student ensemble compliment the main cast - popping up in a variety of supporting roles including cheeky crows and sassy apple trees - and a handful of well-drilled youngsters make great munchkins in delightfully outlandish costumes by Jason Southgate.

As is usual for a Citz Christmas show, this is a 'straight' production rather than a panto. At one point there is scope for a bit of 'behind you!' action that could perhaps have been indulged, but for the most part it's a very faithful version of a compelling tale, and all the better for that.

Comments:

Proud Munchkin Dad: The production is fresh, exciting and sucks the audience in. All actor sreally lose themselves in their roles 'witch' again draws the audience into the emerald forest... the munchkins add that real Christmas feel to a fine production.
