The Bone House
Canada's Village Theatre
This show is seriously scary. Three times the audience is given the chance to leave. Obviously no-one does, but by the end there may well be some who wished they had.
This is an ideal late night show for the Underbelly. It's clever, it's knowing, it's well put together, and it's expertly performed. It may not exactly be a play but, as I said, it's seriously scary whatever it is.
"I have never heard a theatre audience scream like they did when the light wents out"
We are ushered into the presence of Eugene Crowley, serial killer hunter. He looks a bit like John Malkovich and has a distinctly hyper manner.
After a quick zip through some well-known killers and their victims, complete with some pretty nasty photographic projections, we get to his big obsession, Midnight Cowboy.
This is a so-far unmasked killer, who likes to perform his murders in front of an audience. After a few mind experiments and a great deal of shifting people into different seats, plus one obviously fake but still scream-inducing scare, there is palpable unease in the room.
When the only known survivor of one of his attacks, a nervous young woman, is hypnotised into reliving her ordeal, rather like in some recent horror movies but edgy nonetheless, the unease grows.
By now most people have worked out the big twist, which is then graphically revealed – or is it? And then the lights go out.
I have never heard a theatre audience scream like they did then. There were gun shots in the darkness and even I, who was not directly threatened by anything physical, began to get cold shivers.
Still the screams went on from all over the house. And when the lights finally went up again?
Go and experience if you dare.
