Scarborough
Northern Firebrand
Standing in the same spot for 40 minutes of drama might sound like an endurance exercise, but being one of the two dozen voyeurs squeezed into Scarborough is a real privilege.
It's a crying shame that a soundproof space couldn't be found for this peep into the illicit relationship between 15-year-old Daz and his thirtysomething PE teacher, Lauren. But if the bustle of bars and queues outside occasionally proves distracting to the audience, the two actors don't flinch.
"Doesn't just go near the knuckle but lightly grazes it... James Baxter is extraordinarily good"
James Baxter is extraordinarily good in his first theatrical role ' with three performances each day and an audience so close he can hear them breathing, this is certainly a baptism of fire and he absolutely rises to the challenge. Holly Atkins poignantly captures a woman in turmoil, who feels she has been cheated out of a life of passion.
The dialogue doesn't just go near the knuckle but lightly grazes it. When Lauren casually instructs her young lover to grow up, he snaps back 'you wouldn't fancy me if I did'. Later on, a single exchange is too heavy-handed, and jars with the rest of Fiona Evans's otherwise excellent and uncomfortably honest piece in which the two characters alternately love, abuse, betray and deceive.
An awesome soundtrack featuring Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Imogen Heap and Elvis Costello is as invigorating as the surroundings - a room in a budget B&B in the seaside town of the title - are demoralising.
Deborah Bruce's production also makes uncommonly effective use of mobile phones, with the glow of a tiny screen on Lauren's face at one point the only source of light in the tiny room.
