Jesus: The Guantanamo Years

Abie

Jesus: The Guantanamo Years - AbieIn the past, he had his disciples take care of the writing while he concentrated on showmanship.

"A gently satirical little show... Jesus is preaching to the converted"
But now that he's performing stand-up at the Edinburgh Fringe, Jesus curiously seems more skilled at penning material than pacing his delivery and working a crowd.

Maybe it's got something to do with the years he spent in solitary confinement at America's most notorious prison camp.

Simply clad in an orange jumpsuit, accessorised with a crown of thorns, the son of God sets about explaining a few things, including how he made his escape, why he speaks with a Northern Irish accent and the basis of his ongoing legal battle with the Monty Python team.

Performer Abie goes only by his first name - one imagines to avoid the kind of unpleasant letters Stewart Lee began receiving post-Jerry Springer: The Opera. In reality, Christians would be hard-pushed to get too hot under the collar about this gently satirical little show.

Judging by the reaction of the audience, Jesus is preaching to the converted here: anti-war, anti-American, middle-class broadsheet readers who perhaps like their cutting-edge comedy to come with a safety cover.

Show starts at 13:00 (50min).

Until August 27 2006 at Underbelly, Edinburgh (part of Edinburgh Fringe). Tel: 08445 458252. www.underbelly.co.uk
