Fuerzabruta

FuerzabrutaHours after leaving the enormous Black Tent that houses the breath-taking Fuerzabruta, I was still wiping specks of blood off my face. They aren't lying when they promise that everyone will get wet and some will get messy, too.

"A truly epic, spectacular production... it genuinely feels like anything could happen"
It was stage blood, of course, mischievously splattered onto the crowd following the sound of a gunshot and the chest-clutching response of a man desperately running through crowds, walls and even straight into a bustling cafe.

The exhilarating opening sets the tone for a truly epic, spectacular production in which it genuinely feels like anything could happen. Many moments feel like dreams the instant their sets have been whisked magically away by the show's outstanding team of ushers, technicians and set handlers.

There's a couple in period costume desperately trying to connect from either side of what can only be described as a giant foil kite, their legs cycling in mid-air as they furiously battle against gravity. There are nymph-like dancers running around the walls at 90 degrees to the open-mouthed spectators below.

Perhaps most memorable is when a giant clear plastic paddling pool appears in mid-air, and four otherworldly water babies frolic overhead. The result is a human fireworks display - as the dancers swoosh past, those underneath instinctively reach out to touch them, and when they begin hurling themselves face first onto the plastic the chorus of delighted gasps and joyful laughter becomes louder.

This is a big-budget, high concept show that is guaranteed to leave anyone who experiences it wide-eyed with wonder.

Show starts at 19:00, 20:00 and 22:00 (times vary). Not August 13 or 20.

Until September 1 2007 at The Black Tent @ Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh. Tel: 08701 690100. www.edfringe.com

Comments:

Susan Cameron: An overload for the senses, dynamic, forceful and sensual, a sensational production. I had to see it twice.
