Floating
Hoipolloi & Hugh Hughes
There's a lot of very understandable angst about in Edinburgh this year, so is there still room for something which is simply charmingly silly? Thankfully the answer is yes - and here it is.
"Blissful... simply charmingly silly"
Inspired by his nain (that's gran to you), Hugh Hughes brings his multi-media tale of what happened when the Isle of Anglesey broke free of the Menai Bridge and floated off around the North Atlantic. This was on April 1st 1982.
Aided only by the faithful Sioned, a very, very busy young lady, and a collection of low-, medium- and hi-tech devices gathered over the years, he sets out to make us share in the inhabitants' feelings as they cope with these cataclysmic events.
So a mighty bridge collapses, evoked by a chain in a bucket, some pebbles dropped in water, a piece of rope and a pair of scissors - and Sioned, of course.
In a raging gale there is the island in front of us, suffering a ferocious battering on a somewhat miniature scale. We are asked to close our eyes for a countdown of ten and when we open them again, there is the Arctic. And as for all the birds of the world coming to the island's aid in a close encounter with the Isle of Man, well you just have to be there.
Sioned's acting skills are well to the fore in her multiple (two) male supporting roles. As for Hugh himself, he is at great pains to ensure that we understand all the complexities, eagerly using slides and bullet points and offering life lessons about connection and disconnection. Everything you learn about Anglesey in the show is perfectly correct, with the possible exception of one thing.
Thank you, Hugh Hughes, for making your story so clear and entertaining. And thank you Sioned Rowlands for your tireless support, and in particular for your own Atlantic swim.Blissful.
